Lantern
Those who know my particular dos and don’ts of interiors (not that I like to follow many rules), would know that downlights are one of those elements I avoid at all costs. For me, a pendant is the ideal centrepiece for a room but, more than that, simply the way the light is cast around the room brings a little more magic to a space. The simplicity of a lantern has to be one of my favourite pendants. I have long loved paper lanterns, and was especially struck with their beauty upon witnessing an incredible dawn fire ceremony in Japan. In both Chinese and Japanese culture, paper lanterns have held a significant place, in both cultural and aesthetic terms. The fabric lanterns I stock in my shop have a little more permanence to them, while still perfecting the simple elegance of the paper incarnations. Cotton and cane come together beautifully to form, in my opinion, one of the easiest ways to soften an interior. Who can argue with ambient light and sculptural beauty?
