Zinc
Here we are at the end of another alphabet. We’ve spun the full spectrum of materials to arrive at Z for zinc, and I think it makes for a fine material to bookend this alphabet. It’s found in the earth’s crust and has its earliest roots in Rajasthan, add in the fact that its aesthetic is entirely its own and it’s definitely scoring points with me. This particular material can come in a number of different forms, with early alchemists burning it to create “philosopher’s wool”. Then, of course, it makes a sturdy and sleek material in its solid form – case in point my Tincture Clipboard – and is also a welcome vitamin for keeping us strong and healthy. Such versatility is incredible, and it is slightly mindboggling to think about the various early experiments to arrive at such conclusions. And while all these uses are amazing, perhaps I like it for its utilitarian appeal and slight rustic connotations that it has picked up over the coarse of history – there’s nothing like a zinc-topped kitchen island bench.

How far we’ve come in our alphabet that has taken us from the highly decorative amethyst right the way through to versatile and hardworking zinc. The materials I use in my spaces exist like a rainbow of oil paints on my stylist’s palette, which is why I was so keen to catalogue them in this way. And though not all my favourite materials could make the cut, it’s nice to highlight certain stories over another. Through the research phase of this alphabet, I even discovered that there was once a coppersmith in my family. Perhaps there’s more to my love of materials than simply look & feel. Either way, I appreciate the value of materials in a space, and urge you to go beyond the safe options in your own spaces. Who knows what unique aesthetic will materialise…
