Silver
I think we can look at this particular alphabet post beyond its material form. Silver is a strong presence in my life. I turn to it frequently as colour inspiration – a little metallic glimmer can bring such life to an interior – and even the word itself is very special to me. After reading Jeanette Winterson’s Lighthousekeeping, the opening sentence (my mother called me Silver) seemed to sear onto my soul. Not only feeling like that sentence had been written just for me, but loving the sound of the word and the way it rolls off the tongue, I felt compelled to name my own daughter Silver. This means that every time I use this material or colour in spaces I create there’s a new symbolism attached that makes it feel special. Like so many of my favourite materials, it has its own history and special story attached, which is in part the driving force of this alphabet, so I can share them and hopefully add another layer or two to my spaces. Materials themselves are powerful things that can totally change the look, feel and ambience of a space based on their makeup, but even beyond these factors, they can add another dimension based on your attachment to them. And I can say without a doubt that I am very attached to Silver.
