Iron

One of my favourite elements about the work that I do, is the way I’m able to draw from a strong team of craftspeople and artisans, a little bit like a co-op. One of the friends I turn to when in need of something special and striking is my friend & collaborator Saul of Coloforge. He is a blacksmith who has a deep knowledge of the skills of smiths many years his senior, who are no longer here to preserve the craft. Always one who is drawn to the shimmer of flame, I love seeing the unyielding form of iron burn white hot and then become malleable – it’s incredible to watch. And as those sparks fly with the hammer & anvil you see the magic that still lives in his work. I chose iron as the material for today’s post as a nod to Saul, after all, I have to thank him for the special metal shield that lives on my warehouse’s door. The piece draws from my connection with the shape but also my admiration for Saul’s work with iron.
