It is the scent of the hot spring village, shrouded in mist and dewy rainfall, ryokan and public baths lining the streets.

It is the memory of natural materials, timber, bamboo, charcoal and stone, and the elements of rain and fire. The word petrichor comes to mind, the term used to describe the smell of rain hitting earth.

It is the sillage of sitting cross-legged on tatami mats eating fiddlehead ferns after a refreshing dip in the hot spring with the soundtrack of the river as it flows steadily by.
