There was a thoroughness and opulence to dining cars during the golden age of train travel. One dressed for dinner and meals made fresh on board were served on real china by attentive waiters under the watchful eye of the steward.

I am drawn to the thoughtful design of serviceware on such voyages, the marriage of practicality & aesthetic to ensure that the experience was not lacking. An item from my object collection that encapsulates this era is a vintage water carafe, with its cork top housed in silver plate and chain. I was also inspired by railway serviceware to create my 1856 Dining Plate, a hark back to simple but quality chinaware one might find in the dining car.
