During my trip to Morocco earlier this year whilst wandering through the medina of Marrakech, I came across some antique hamsa, an ancient symbol from Mesopotamia times. In this part of the world the hamsa is also known as the Hand of Fatima, who was the daughter of the prophet Muhammad. The hamsa is also found amongst symbolism from other religions and cultures throughout North Africa and the Middle East, yet it is always a symbol that brings the wearer protection, blessing and peace.

In its base form, it is a symmetrical hand but can be beautifully decorated and patterned, and made in all kinds of materials – from large colourfully painted clay hamsa that hang above a doorway to delicately embossed gold & silver hamsa charms to add to a bracelet or necklace.

If you are looking for a small charm like piece, our Antique Silver Fatima Hand will be perfect for a necklace of leather thong or a key chain. Alternatively, if you’re after a larger hamsa to hang or work into a tablescape, have a look at our soft leather backed Fatima Hand.
