TSI x Sarah Andrews

Last year I reached out to some of my favourite creatives who share a likemindedness to The Society Inc, to borrow their eyes and explore their interpretation of my product range. These fellow aesthetes come from a range of backgrounds & pursuits, from photographers to interior stylists to product designers, and I invited them to put their own spin & story into the imagery.

This week I look through the eyes of Sarah Andrews, innkeeper of her gorgeous stay Captains Rest, stylist & teacher at The Hosting masterclass. We are very much of the same ilk, with a nomadic spirit, a shared love of curated stays and a good dose of seafaring paraphernalia. I was fortunate enough to stay at Captains Rest which you can read about here, and look forward to returning there one day

Where do you live?
Nowhere. I am actually no fixed address and have been most of my life. After 37 years my mum is pretty sick of getting all my mail and having to deal with all my speeding fines, but the vagabond life has always been kind to me. The last 6 months has seen me living in the South Of France, at Wormistourne Castle in Scotland, an attic flat in Chelsea and back here in deep isolation at the end of the world, Captains Rest. I live alone, but sometimes friends are brave enough to join me, and for the pandemic? I convinced my European holiday romance to join me here in far far away Tasmania. A good enough way as any I think to get to know someone?

Profession
Innkeeping at Captains Rest, Styling all over the world, Teaching at The Hosting Masterclass with enough time left over to be Sarah Andrews. For all these hats I feel the absolute luckiest.

Favourite space, room, or place
Captains Rest, Tasmania. Travel far and wide, there is no greater place than a world of my own I created, then got to share.

Favourite season
Winter. A stormy sea best suits me. Its the best way to ensure I get the place to myself.

Last book you read, or podcast, or audio book, or mag
It’s annoyed anyone I’ve ever been in some kind of something with, but I can’t ever seem to have less than 4 books on the go. It averages out at about 6, which in hand luggage terms cancels me out from ever flying Jet Star. They usually fill my bed as well. Right now, I’m carrying around / sleeping with King of the Wilderness, about Deny King — set in Tasmania. A book of poems by Adrienne Rich, The Dream of a Common Language — it is SO beautiful. On loan from my best friend is Ishmael, by Daniel Quinn — which is about philosophy taught by a gorilla named Ishmael, wild. And Blueback by Tim Winton – for any non readers out there who want the most beautiful small thing to read, this is your book. I gift this to everyone, then forget, then they get it the next year too.

Most treasured object or heirloom
I have a little gold ring with an “S” on – my mum found, and then gave me. It’s sort of daggy, but I never take it off. I don’t ever feel powerful enough without it. When I was a little girl I used to believe that all objects held different powers, the more powerful, the more well hidden and mysterious. I’ll tell you a secret, I still believe this — and I feel good about having something special like this find its way to me.

Favourite scent in your house
Sandalwood, my little wood burner with the door just open and fresh-cut roses from my garden outside.

Music you listen to at home
I oscillate between classical and hip hop. A giant list of my favourites makes up this playlist.

What do you want for your birthday
Another talisman, please. A home of my own, this one not for sharing. And my next boat. 2021 I’d like to try sail around the world again. It feels like the right time.

Favourite movie
Cafe De Flore, a movie that wonders if some things are meant to be. I wonder this too.
