On Island Time; Flinders Island, Tasmania

Flinders Island is just a 45 minute flight in a small, 20-seater plane from Hobart on Sharpe airlines (or you can fly in from Launceston or Melbourne). In late summer, while on a whirlwind weeklong tour of Tasmania, we finally made the hop over to Flinders, an island of big vistas, big tides (3m), giant limpets, vast land, sea and skyscapes, and big sunsets

The wild, untamed beauty of the island is immediately visible from the air, and from the moment we stepped off the plane, we found they do things differently here. Our host, Jo Youl, lent us her 4WD Subaru - keys in the door at the airport style.

There are many, many petite islands off all sides of Flinders, which is criss-crossed by sandy paths and windswept she-oaks. Everywhere you look there are sweeping views, with cat tails fluttering in the swift wind of 40+ knots. The salt bush and tea trees covered in waxy flowers have grown to accommodate the strong gusts, permanently leaning over in a bend the locals know as “Flinders angle”

Our accommodation, Wombat lodge [https://www.onislandtime.com.au/wombat-lodge], sits on Jo’s family property, Quoin Farm, outside of Killiecrankie a half hour drive from the airport along sealed and dirt road. There are shops and restaurants close to the airport on The Esplanade at Whitemark. You can pick up all your local produce goodies there from On Island Time, Jo’s business at The Flinders Wharf.

A 15 min 4WD sand track through the farm takes you to Stacky's Bight Beach where giants of mottled orange lichen and grey stones lie sleeping, marking the magical point where the mountains meet the sea. Cuttlefish lines the tideline of the wild seas where mythological giant squid may play amongst the neptune’s necklace, white boney weed and tossed coral pebbles. Swimming is a must in these clear, aqua waters, with great snorkelling in beautiful temperatures when we visited.

What to Bring?

Pack for all seasons. Although the temperature is milder than Mainland Tasmania, we can have four seasons in a day. As Flinders Island is located on the Roaring 40’s, it can get windy.
